Marble Care

Guidance: Marble is not an inert material. It is stone that records time — softening, warming, and deepening with the life lived around it. Every L’Avenue piece leaves the atelier hand-finished and ready for daily use. What follows are not rules, but the small rituals that let the stone age beautifully rather than carelessly.

Daily Care

Wipe with a soft, damp cloth and a pH-neutral cleaner, then dry with a clean towel. Blot spills as they happen rather than wiping them across the surface. A coaster or tray beneath anything acidic or oily is the single habit that protects the stone most.

What to Avoid

Acids are marble’s only real adversary — citrus, wine, vinegar, tomato, and most household sprays will, over time, dull the polish. Avoid abrasive pads, scouring powders, and standing water left for long periods. When in doubt, warm water and a soft cloth are always safe.

Spills & Marks

Blot immediately; never let liquids sit too long. For a stain that has set, a gentle stone poultice will draw it out. It helps to know the difference between a stain — colour absorbed into the stone, usually liftable — and an etch, a dull mark where acid has touched the polish. Etching is part of how marble lives, and on most of our stones it reads as soft character rather than damage.

Resealing

Depending on use, a piece benefits from resealing once in a while. The test is simple: place a few drops of water on the surface. If the water beads, the seal is holding. If it darkens and soaks in, it is time to reseal. Doing so at home is easy: with a quality impregnating stone sealer from any good hardware shop, clean and dry the surface, wipe the sealer evenly across the stone, let it rest a few minutes, then buff away any excess with a soft cloth.

Marble Outdoors

Marble lives beautifully outdoors — on covered terraces, beneath pergolas, in any setting sheltered from prolonged rain. It must be well sealed before installation and resealed once in a while or every 2 years. In freezing climates, drain bathtubs and standing water before winter, as trapped moisture can crack stone. Paler marbles may soften subtly in strong sun; deeper stones such as Nero Marquina and Verde Alpi hold their colour longest.

On Patina

We will be honest with you. Marble is not a material that stays flawless forever, and we would not wish it to. It earns a patina — faint etches, a warmth to the polish, a quiet record of dinners and mornings. If you want one that becomes more yours with time, there is nothing finer.
